I ordered some rotors online and they came like this... the front ones are the shiny ones and the rears are the dull grey ones.. is there something obviously wrong with these? (did they send me cheap rear rotors?) And the fronts are stamped TRW and the rears have no stamp at all (they're supposed to be a set of trw rotors for a 05 530i)

I'll assume the rears are inferior and I will probably ask for a refund, but what do you guys think?

i'm no expert, but my cousin works at an indy BMW shop and the OEM rotors are dull grey when i see them doing brake and rotor replacements. i assume it's a coating that comes off once the brakes are applied. could also help check if they are seated or bedded correctly.

Those rotors don't look like they were completed, I'd return them and buy from somewhere else. One rule is to never cheap out on rotors, pads, or anything else thats making your car stop.

I didnt put the rotors/pads on yet just got them in the mail today and was confused by the difference in appearance from the fronts and rears, cause the front ones look real good and have a nice machined edge along the edges but the rear ones dont look anything like the fronts and theyre a bit crappy looking/cheap compared to the fronts

I bought some cheap rotors and they were all silvery like the reflective ones you have. However, i probably would have still put them on if they were dull grey-ish because they are going to get chewed up anyways... (assuming they are a worthy rotor dealer and have no reviews that are bad involving the dull grey issue.)

The next time I buy rotors it will probably expensive ones though (to ck-e60's point). I notice that i have to Change the rotors in my Saturn more frequently than when they had stock ones on. Granted the cheap ones on the Saturn are only $15 lol and the cheap ones on the BMW are like $70.

i just replaced my rears with zimmerman rotors last week and they also had that coating. i'm glad i read the paper work because every brake job i've ever done required me to clean the coating off with brake clean but this one specifically said not to. it will ware off after some miles. i've put on about 200 since then it its perfect. i used OE pads also. read the insructions, just leave the coating on and put your new brakes together.

That coating helps to prevent the rust on the rotors (especially the area where pads don't touch the rotors).
