So BMW decided to can the TT on the new 535s
Hi Guys, not sure is this is a repost but ...

The N55 engine will now use a single turbo to power the 535. That being said, I guess BMW figured out that they have goofed with the Twin Turbo design and that the engine has way too many issues in the long run. That got me thinking ... all of us who have the N54, who will eventually be plauged with reliability issues, have to come up with some sort of a solution
... like swapping in the twin turbo V8 into our cars
I'm concerened

Yeah this has been known since the F07 started coming out ( the F10 is based on the SWB F01 and same goes for the F07), and the LCI E87/9x were announced to get it.
Not really news, but the N54 will get "up tuned" in the new "iS" cars while the N55 will be the x/s3.5 motor at the same time just to add confusion...I'm sure this will do "wonders" on the reliability and increase the Fun factor.
So you will have a a mess of 3.0L motors...
3.0 Single Turbo Diesel
3.0 Double Turbo Diesel
3.0 NA detuned N52 (240 or so)
3.0 NA N53 ( 273 or so Hp)
3.0 Single mutli vane dual scroll turbo (N55)
3.0 Twin Turbo N54"b" model in the 7's (320hp)
3.0 Twin turbo N54 "iS" motor...

The switch to a single turbo is only due to emissions requirements. It has nothing to do with long term reliability. If it were a reliability problem, they wouldn't be continuing with the turbos for any of the upcoming models.

that is really too sad. both nissan and toyota built bombproof super high performing twin turbo cars in the early 90's. i have a 91 300zx twin turbo, and it has been incredibly reliable. it has 140k on the clock and runs perfectly with the original turbos. the only true failure it has had was a rear wheel bearing at 100k.
i wonder why bmw couldn't do the same thing.
i guess a single large turbo is ok, just may have more turbo lag.

We'll see how the single turbo holds up in regards to lower end torque and what kind of performance tunes come out for it.

SKYLINE GTR!!!!! smokin fast and surely as reliable as a z32 TT like mine. but its not german, and german cars just have a feel to them that the japanese do not. its hard to explain.
i drove my z32TT to work yesterday, and my 545i just feels so much more planted, stable, and safe. so i drove the 545 to work today, sadly the z32 may not see much action in the future, hence its for sale now.
is it true that the new 550 will be turbocharged? if so it will be insanely fast, holysh*t!

Unless we are going back to stone age, I don't see this kind of issue/evolution for both electrical and mechanical would come to a stop.
PS. Bombproof Toyota? Look who is recalling millions of cars in the US. None can escape from this kind of "upgrade"
PPS. I am not native to English so please don't mind my poor write up.
PPPS. What is EURO 6? Take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europea...sion_standards
