Guys:

It's getting cooler here in the US and was thinking about the winter. I need to get me a set of snow tires for the MI winter and was wondering what the reccs from you guys were. I have the OEM 17" factory rims and am not planning on changing rims or rim size for the winter....

Any advice/help would be appreciated!

Blizzak LM series are what I have had good personal experiences with...

Buyer beware and do your homework, not all Blizzaks are the same!

The Blizzak WS is another rubber compound they offer, but it is a VERY SOFT tire, that (imo) resulted in a horribly mushy ride..Would never buy them again.

I've had other BMW RWD owners tell me the Dunlop M3 is a very good snow too.

I had a set of Dunlop M2's that I used for six winters with my 3ers. No complaints. Just bought a set of Michelin PA3's for the E60 to try something different.

As above, the Blizzal-LM's and Dunlop M3's seem to be the best and most popular, on here and tirerack.com...at least in the US.

+1 on the Blizzak LM's . I ran LM22's on my E39 and just bought a set on 17" rims for my E60. Absolutely flawless tires...The E39 rode like it was on rails regarless of how much white stuff was on the ground.

Who told you that?

+1 for Dunlop Winter Sport M3's. They are also one of the only manufacturers to offer them in the staggered 18" sizes for the sport models.

According to Nordic car magazines pool, who did a vast winter tire test for Nordic conditions, the are best are:

Continental ContiVikingContact5

Michelin X-Ice X12

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R

Bridgestone Blizzak Nordic WN-01

All very good responses. The new Michelin X-Ice Xi2 (brand new) tires look to be incredible (per R&T). I loved my Dunlop M3s (much more than my Blizzak LM-22s - but I think the LM-25s are a better tire from what I've heard).

BMW recommends the Artic Alpin and from what I've read anything Nokian makes is wonderful - including their all season which can be used as a snow tire (per them).

Good idea staying with 17" wheels -you can find plenty of people selling stock BMW wheels, pick up a set used, go over to Discount Tire and purchase your snow tire of choice and they will swap your wheels/tires for you for free in the fall and spring.
