My Ride: 2008 Sapphire Black on Black M5 - loaded sans soft close doors
Default

Since I've purchased a car before in December and know that there are not too many snow tires available around then, I figured I better start looking now.

First question is - Can 17" wheels fit on a 550 sport? (smaller wheel/tire is better for snow)
Next question is - If I don't go with runflats and purchase five(5) rims and tires, IS there a place to store a spare in the 550? (sorry if that question seems stupid, I just don't know).
Final question is - Do I need to order anything special for the tire pressure sensor? Or does that run off the abs sensor and not have its own?

Thanks but....
Try and search for wheels under 545 Sport and they don't show any 17" Wheels (making me question the 17" snows they offer) and no where on there is information regarding my questions 2 and 3.

of course you can put any wheels on e60 no matter on engine from 16-20-21"

oem 16-19"

so yes you can have 17" rims Like I do, and I do not need a spare tire at all, as long as you choose the right size, it will fit in the place for the spare wheel in the trunk, !!! but the tire and rim size have to be the one BMW suggested.

Now you can have bigger rims with some spec. tires, I stay with 17"

The 16" wheels do not fit the 550i, because the discs are larger than in the 6 cylinder models.

Go for 17" BMW wheels and a good winter tire.

The German carmagazine AutoMotor&Sport tested winter tires for mid-european use and the best where:

- Dunlop SP Winter Sport D3
- Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip 7
- Pirelli Winter 210 Sotto Zero

You do not need Runflat tires and there should be room for the spare in the trunk.

Check if you dealer has any kind of winter tyres promotion.

I ordered a set of four Style 138 alu rims and Dunlop Winter Sport 3D winter tyres (225/50 R17) for under 2,000 EURO (VAT included).

well i think you should check closely on this one point, the 550i may not be able to support even 17"s due to the rotors, ...there may be some info in the manual or the sticker by the drivers door...i've choosen 18s to run in the winter on a set of Michelin Alpin PA2 performance winter tires

I got a set of 17" Blizzaks (tires and wheels) from TireRack last year, and would highly recommend the combination.
