Smoke coming from oil cap

Hi,
I just got a 535xi 2008 last week. After a few days, I got a message indicating to add oil. I did it and everything seems fine. However, when I opened the oil cap, there was a little bit of smoke getting out of the engine. Is this normal?

Was it cold out? If so it was just steam from the hot oil.

I suppose a 535xi driven hard should consume some oil. But my 530xi doesn't require additional oil even when changes are at 12K-15K miles
Is there something wrong with my engine 
... I sometimes drive over 80-90 mph and run the engine to red-line only a couple times a week.

Hot engine (oil) and cold temps = normal for some vapor present when you open the oil filler cap. You wrote that iDrive reported low oil. How many miles since the oil service was done?
