Hi,

I just got a 535xi 2008 last week. After a few days, I got a message indicating to add oil. I did it and everything seems fine. However, when I opened the oil cap, there was a little bit of smoke getting out of the engine. Is this normal?

Thanks for your advice!

Ben

Was it cold out? If so it was just steam from the hot oil.

Yes it was. Around 32F (0C). So it seems it is normal then.

I like when its really cold and you can see the steam coming out of the front grills. Makes me smile every time.

Hot engine (oil) and cold temps = normal for some vapor present when you open the oil filler cap. You wrote that iDrive reported low oil. How many miles since the oil service was done?

I suppose a 535xi driven hard should consume some oil. But my 530xi doesn't require additional oil even when changes are at 12K-15K miles Is there something wrong with my engine ... I sometimes drive over 80-90 mph and run the engine to red-line only a couple times a week.

Based on computer, it remains 4000mi before next oil service. So I would think about 11000mi.
