This may be strange, but I love my SMG (when it works...), but don't like the fairly rough downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st when rolling to a stop at a red light.
I tried to put it in neutral now when rolling towards the light and then put it in 1st again when I am standing. Works really well Will this harm the SMG?

Also, I tried to put it in N while driving and the back into gear . Works also. Any harm here?

I am not having that problem. Sometime, rarely though, if I am coming to a stop and I downshift into first to soon(speed to high) it doesn't know to engage clutch or not and it lurched a little. This only happened three times in 9500 miles.
What do you mean by fairly rough?

How many miles do you have on your car? I am approahing 9000 and do not have rough downshifts when coming to a stop. My SMG seemed to get smoother after the first 2000 miles. This could have something to do with software updates as I've had a few upgrades since delivery.

When it auto downshifts, it forces 1st in evertime right before I come to the stop. The car "jumps" and I play "bobblehead". Its a fairly sting jerk.

I have 1200 miles on the car, but had a software update for the SMG done 2 weeks ago (I had a "severe tansmisission failure"), which turned out to be some software issue.

That's your problem, none of the rest of us use auto mode.
I'll try my car in auto mode, but I don't think is not smooth.

Try to control your revs more by working the gas pedal. That way you can control when and if the car downshofts for you. The more you control the car, the smoother it will be.

I don't use auto mode . It just dowshifts into first just before I come to a stop. When I drive a manual, I don't force 1st in either right before the stop, but only after the car came to a stop.

So your in manual mode and the car displays first gear just before you stop, indicating that it shifted into 1st gear. Mine will downshift as well if the revs get to low. If you are making a normal stop, then I would bring it in to get checked.

ok my question... so will it be better and smoother if we downshift into first like when its at 15mph then come to a complete stop instead of waiting for the car to downshift into first at 900 RPMs at 7mph?
