Okay, Iceman and the others saved me from going into my typical SMG tome but just to add a little, here is a link to the SMG FAQ that has similar information to what's been posted.

Also, this thread was one of my favorites about SMG.

Oh, and I almost forgot this thread and this one too!

Doesn't the SMG have a "auto" mode?

If you are living in the city or has to travel to somewhere with bad traffic everyday, never get SMG!!!
If you live in the country side or you don't have to drive w/ the bimmer everyday, go w/ the SMG.

My explaination is, SMG is something loads of fun, you can play around w/ it and do whatever you want in the way you want! Well, you can play w/ steptronic, but it's response is never fast enough to your wish....

You're entitled to your opinion but clearly many people, including me, strongly disagree with this sentiment!

I'm with Rudy on this one. It makes traffic MUCH more bearable. No clutch work needed. Will downshift to 1st by itself (if you already shifted into 2nd and roll to a stop). I do a lot of city driving and I'd have to say the opposite. But, hey, that's just me.

I don't believe that anyone that actually drives the SMG in city traffic will agree with you.

It may not be everyone agrees with me, but city driving is not good for SMG transmission....

This happens especially in my place of living, lots and lots of uphill/downhill parking...

SMG is very fun to drive, and has the auto mode to be very convenience. However, it is still a manual transmission w/ clutch. Therefore, if someone don't want stick because of some reason, they shouldn't get the SMG too....

i didn't get smg just because my gf didn't like the sport package (she doesn't drive though ). but if i have the sport pkg, i'll definitely get the smg . you can always stick w/the auto. but if some punk a$$ try to race you, smg is there for you .

Can you expand on that last statement a little bit, please? The problem that I have with that is that SMG is a manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch that is operated electrically via a computer. This set up should have less wear on the mating components between the engine and the transmission than a manual clutch. I drove a manual clutch in the last 5-series for 90,000 miles and it is still going good in Denver today with no clutch maintenance.

So my basic question would be, if a manual 6-speed can survive city driving, why not the SMG?
