My 2005 545i w/SMG and 38k easy miles would not start because I could not get it to neutral, then a transmission fail safe warning. Dealer says: hydraulic pump 23-42-7-571-297 and relay 12-63-1-742-690 estimate $5300?..REALLY???

Low mileage - dealer maintained car ... Raise this issue to BMWNA and get a replacement transmission installed on their dime or put a Toyota logo on the trunk!

Man are they trying to rip you off or what? If those two parts are in fact what it needs, you can buy them from realoem.com for $341.88 total. Plus $5,000 labor - something is missing here?

03 Repair kit, hydraulic pump 1 23427571297 $333.56
Relay changer salmon red 1 12631742690 $8.32

If I am not mistaken, I believe you have to drop the tranny to swap the hydraulic pump and relay. Don't get me wrong, it is still a ridiculous bill for labor. Find a good independent shop near you. If you are in SoCal, I hear Ronin does excellent work on bimmers. I plan to take my 545i SMG there in a couple of weeks for an oil change.

When you get it done can you tell me how many quarts and the type of oil used. Also let me know if reprogramming is required please.

The SMG does not seem to be very reliable... GL with the car and +1 on talking to BMWNA If the car was serviced in dealership all the oil changes etc You should be able to get some help. Unless You are 5th owner... Anyway good luck. I am getting my angine replaced at 54K mls in my 545 and I am past warranty.

Not really.

Just in the past BMW was in the habit of swapping trannys. Now there is rebuilt SMG pump kits, rebuilt SMG pumps, SMG pumps, etc. that are available. His dealership is just really sticking it to him.

Wait until an auto tranny fails. Very limited people are willing to rebuild them. What do you think the cost of new auto is going to cost you????

Part Number for the fluid is 83-29-0-429-576. Not sure how much of it but I don't think its anything crazy.
