Thumbs up

I'm curious about the rational for two different shift speeds in the E60 SMG. Is the "slow shift" setting for comfort or does it reduce component wear and perhaps extend transmission life?

I personally like the sport setting and find the shifts smooth. If there is a component wear argument to the "slow shift" standard setting then I would use it preferably, reserving the sport setting for the ocassional merc, acura, infinity, ect.

Does anyone know?

Not that I'm 100% sure but I'm not aware of any additional wear and tear using the sport mode.

I'm betting the normal mode is more of a comfort thing. Actually, and again, I'm not that versed on clutch/transmission wear and tear, the normal mode may actually cause more wear due to the way the clutch is engaged at a slower rate -- maybe it causes more slippage?

One thing to remember -- the sport mode does more than alter the shifting, it also increases throttle response. This increased response can take away some "comfort" for your passengers since even a slight movement of the right foot results in a change in the throttle response.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. The only reference to increased wear and tear in the owner's manual is under the acceleration assistant (or launch control.)

When I am alone, I would always use the sport mode. The increase in throttle response makes the car feel more powerful. I like that. But when I am with family on the weekend outing, I really appreciate the slower, but more comfortable gear changes.

As far as wear goes. I go with Rudy, that sport mode should cause less slippage, thus less wear. Either way, I think you shouldn't worry about clutch because they should last a long time. Anybody care to chime in on this?

"Comfort" mode would also be more fuel efficient in addition to being less fun.

hmm.. now that we're on the subject of smg again, i heard something about the paddles (or shifter, possibly) being sensitive to how hard or fast you press it - and thereby alternating how quickly or smoothly it shifts...

or is this my imagination?

Unless you're driving an M-car, the following post will outline it for you:

You can read about launch control on page 6 of the .pdf file attached to the following post:
