Thought maybe this would interest some of you folks:

Master_SBT_Sequential_manual_transmission__SMG__E60_v2.pdf

edit: (Jan 29, 2005) replaced original (7 page) SMG document with complete (58 page) document including all "more" links (which were dead in the original document.)

The simplest way to navigate the document is to follow the bookmarks. The first 7 pages are all you need to view directly -- the rest of the pages will come up if you click a "more" link or use a "more information" bookmark.

It's the definitive technical document on the SMG...enjoy it folks!

edit (Feb 16, 2005): corrected an error with the last bookmark and added one page (service staff general information) to correct it. (was downloaded 120 times prior to this update.) If anyone saved the old version, you may want to download the new version to stay up-to-date...

It certainly was of interest. Browsed it and printing now. Now we know how that little orange light by the shifter is connected to sleep mode and what the associated function is.

Thanks, Rudy.

I'll have something to read while I'm waiting for Doom3 in Frye's Electronics today.

Great stuff Rudy,

Because of your link, I finally found the courage to call my SA to change my order from Step to SMG.

Cant wait till November!!!!!

I hope your choice gives you as much satisfaction as it did for me!

I imagine you read all of my other rants with regard to the subject of SMG -- if you didn't, be sure use the search function to fully understand my opinions. My main reason for saying this to you now is strictly due to the fact that you changed from a Step to an SMG (rather than changing from a manual to an SMG).

Let me know if you need any more information!

Good decision. Never regret making the choice to SMG since delivery back in April, I still can't get the smile off my face .... it is really great. I wonder how the shft program in sport mode compares to the most aggressive shift program in the M3 SMG system? I know the M3 system is different and offers more programs, but I hear that most people find use for rally only the highest setting and one for more subdued driving (in that case the 5er SMG system is certainly adequate).

I find my smile just keeps getting bigger the more I adapt to the car. I also took delivery in April and have close to 5000 miles now. My brain takes quite a long time to "reprogram" my old habits. I'm really feeling now like the SMG is becoming second nature -- just like the "old-fashioned" manuals used to feel over the years.

Thanks for the heads-up Rudy,

I only considered Steptronic because of my wife. I presently drive a stick and love every minute of it. Yes even in L.A. traffic.

I sent the e-mail to my SA yesterday requesting this change, and I am awaiting confirmation. Hopefully, this will not delay my delivery date of Nov. 2
