up until now it was flawless-but reading here what has been happening-i was ready for it!so it happened to me too!
Driving on a hwy in a slow moving traffic(in auto mode-usually i am in manual)i get Transmission fault message saying it is possible to use R or 1 2 3 and to go to a dealer ASAP,after 20 secs i come to a full stop because of the traffic, trying to start again and the car is not moving at all,at this point display shows N,i am playing with gear selector, shut down engine, restart, still not moving, still showing the same message, which at this point is not relevant anymore(still says driving is possible in R or 1 2 3)but the car is not moving, dispay shows N no matter what...
Flatbed came, will take car to dealer tomorrow morning(i chose BMW of Manhattan-the nearest one).Anybody had similar or the same? I seem to remember somebody here had similar and was towed to BMW of Manhattan-can't find the thread-please help-need to know how long it should take. Thanks!

Sounds like a really bad day. Haven't had anything similar in 18 months of SMG. Did have a problem gettting the display to correspond with the movement of the stick, but ver. 18 has apparently fixed all of that. Bottom line is that SMG is working flawlessly for me. Sorry about your experience.

I thought I remembered somthing about SMG too but after some searching I think it was this that I remembered...

Edit: I would venture to guess its the hydraulic pumps losing pressure... hence cant engage the clutch to shift gears...

Thanks EBMC!
i checked these and other threads but did not find exactly same description of my problem-seems like most were unable to start the car with car stuck in some gear.Oh well,i am in a positive mode now-i will probably get the latest software(i had steering clunk/AS failure message, radio played dirty tricks on me-would not shut down sometimes) and i recently began hearing fast popping sound when upshifting on hard acceleration.I will post the results as soon as i find out.

Alex, the problem you are experiencing is not a software issue -- rather, it is a hardware issue.

Tell, don't ask, your dealer to check and then replace the SMG hydraulic pumps and the SMG actuators. Getting the lastest software will not rectify your problem.

Thanks a lot guys
i think we are on a right track-i did find some meaningful info on these threads,i will definately tell them to check hydraulic pumps, now i am very suspicious of that fast pitched popping sound i've been hearing lately when upshifting at high speed.Did anybody hear from Pennetta since his transmission was replaced?
