I'm going to call the dealership about it on Monday. Because I noticed when I went in the garage today after my wife came home from work that I could smell burning clutch, which is something I have never smelled before.

I had it once in my old SMG car when simply driving in heavy traffic on I-95. never had any issues when driving the car hard, though.
I recently had clutch issues with my new 530i manual shift after ONE fast start, which is absolutely ridiculous. The cluth smelled for about a week and then it got better again

I took it in today. I drove it fairly hard brining it in to the dealership, but the thing wouldn't stink. I told the tech to take the car out and drive it fairly hard for five minutes the way it should be driven and see what it would do. The service adviser said it stunk... very bad... and gave me a loaner car while they looked into it.

They called before closing today and said they are ordering a new clutch and will be replacing the clutch and sending the old one back to BMW in New Jersey. I don't know what any of this may mean to me... the cars still under warranty, but I'm worried because I know clutches aren't usually covered by warranties.

How many miles do you have on your car so far?

No worries. I think that they will cover your clutch under warranty.

The BMW full maintenance warranty in the US covers everything except gas and tires (and, in the case of the Dunlop runflat issue, tires are replaced under warranty too!)

Speaking of SMG issues, I'm not sure what the outcome will be but my clutch has been slipping lately -- it happened right after the CIP upgrade to 24.00. It slipped pretty severely for about a week until I took it back to the dealer. The day I was taking it back, I noticed it wasn't slipping as much and, wouldn't you know it, the dealer couldn't duplicate the slipping. There were no faults recorded, etc. so they reset the adaptive map on the transmission and gave the car back to me. As soon as I drove off the lot, the clutch started slipping again! I gave it a few days to see if the transmission would adapt again but I'm not seeing any results. Clearly something is up with the car -- I'm probably going to drop by there this week and have someone take a ride with me. If they don't notice it slipping, they don't know what a slipping clutch is!

After that, we'll see if they end up doing something with software or replacing the clutch...

Hi, my car had a similar problem with just 12,000 km (around 7,500 miles), and my Dealer replaced the cluch under warranty, after that no more problems (the car has now 27,000 miles). I remember I had to drive with care for short period of time (about 300 miles) and after that I?ve been driven in insane way and no more problems. Check the problem with your dealer.

Wow how did I miss this thread? DANG. But like what has already been said. how you drove it should not have over heated the clutch. I've "speedshifted" many times before and no problems. Plus I really dont think you can speed shift in a SMG... it might seem like you are but the car will modulate the gas for you but at a MUCH quicker rate. I havent once seen over heated clutch on my SMG... thank goodness... *knock on wood* 545 times... and hopefully i never will.

But I'm glad the dealer is replaceing the clutch for you. might have been a faulty clucth not allowing it to disengage the clutch fully... either that or... I'm afraid to say it... or the hydraulic pumps not letting out the clutch fully? Hope not. I dont like to hear SMG problems...
