spare is a $130 option in the UK if you get anything but the 16" non-runflats

it's important to leave the spare in the trunk of a BMW. apart from being an integral part of safety in case of a rear end impact, but more importantly removing it will upset the 50-50 balance of your car. i personally prefer a full size spare for some additional rear grip since i am alone in the car most of the time.

How can this be? On specyfying run-flats in the UK there is nothing in the boot/trunk, so it can't be safety or balance related.

that is a crock: in the UK with run-flat nothing comes in the hole... and the tire is not required to absorb the shock in that location as the structure of the vehicle absorbs shock, not empty compartments...

and finally, if not having a spare wheel in the well will 'upset the perfect balance' can one assume that, say you buy a case of beer, you measure the exact centre and tie it down? howzabout luggage... howzabout 0 passengers v. 1 v. 2 v. more?

crazy talk...

Not to mention fuel.

The difference is typically 40-50kg between fueling - and that spare wheel doesn't weigh more than max. 20kg.

Agree with Skidster

When I got my very first BMW about 13 years ago (E30 M3), I needed to carry "ballast" in the boot(trunk) in the winter otherwise it was VERY VERY VERY Tail happy in slippery road conditions, with more modern systems, asc, dsc etc this has not been needed, 10% variance in the front/rear is going to make bugger-all difference to the handling in real-life situations. If they were as weight sensitive as older models (which did get a bit of a reputation), you would have to adjust ballast after a heavy meal!....ok, maybey a bit extreme but you get my point!

Skidster - I couldn't agree more with you. I guess some E60 owners are really paranoide? IMHO it comes down to plain old logical sense. Do you really think that having a spare will help when your car gets rear-ended? I don't think so, where is the logic here? If it really would make a difference don't you think that BMW would include a spare wheel in all of them? And about the 50/50 weight balance, how much does a spare tire weight? IMHO not enough to make a real difference, if it would then you might also be concerned about the fuel tank level, as in, keep it filled up otherwise you might disturb the 50/50 weight ratio, yeah right, as you already said, just crazy talk.

I have run-flats and a small spare tire.

So I guess when I have one passenger, he/she should sit in the rear on the right side so I will have perfect weight distribution (assuming we weigh the same) otherwise I'll have to give the passenger some weights if they weigh less than me or I'll have to carry weights if I weigh more.
