There is quite a delay when changing gears in Steptronic mode.
You almost have to change earlier than you would normally knowing that the revs are going to go that much higher before the box actually shift to the next gear.
Is this a quirk of the 530D or do others experience the same? My X5 diesel changes immediately in Steptronic mode.
I am meeting with a tech. expert from BMW head office to investigate a number of transmission issues the worst being a grinding gear change from time to time on kickdown. Just want to have all my facts before the meeting.
TIA

It takes about 1.5 - 2 sec to change gear. It sucks, but it's ok. It's just like you're driving stick shift. Can anyone shift from one gear to the other faster than 1.5 sec?

I dont want instantaneous changes as such it's just that when the revs reach a certain RPM and you decide OK it's now time change that's when you want the change, not a 1000 or so rpm's higher when you are now out of the torque peak.
RH530 you say it's instantaneous, MY530i you say that there is 1.5 to 2 second delay. Now I am even more confused.
What do the rest of you find?

No way - 1.5 to 2 seconds would be a huge delay.
My steptronic has a perceptible delay shifting from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration and I have learned to counter this by shifting somewhat before I actually want the gear to change. Still, I can easily make that change in under a second. Otherwise I do not notice any delay and it feels not so different from changing a manual.

My "delay" definition is from the time you start shifting the Steptronic shifter to the time the engine settles in the expected gear. Same apply for manual transmission. The worst delay is from 1st to 2nd.

I haven't timed it, but there is clearly a delay, and you need to think ahead to shift accurately.? It's improved from E39, but not instantaneous.

Try getting up to speed then SLAMMING on the brakes. You'll probably get an ABRUPT, HARD, downshift. I think that's 'just how it is' too......
