As my 15 year old son told me when I had him drive it... "how can you stand driving it like this"!

Although I have not opened it up to check things out yet; I am looking at a few options... either a short shift kit from Rouge, Dinan or UUC. If not that then a rebuilt kit for the shifter I have. I was looking at what ECS has to offer and was wondering if anyone has used their Teflon Shifter Bushing Kit?

UUC all the way. From older stick BMWs I've had, the majority of the play was a worn pin in the coupler at the end of the gearbox. But on my M5, the UUC SSK with the 5 pound knob worked best.

 

Will consider the short shifter but right now, I am not sure if I want to spend around $300.00 for a short shifter on a 13 year old car. What is the next best scenario?

 

Worn parts cause slop. Pin #16 shown on RealOEM was the culprit on my old 320i - it was worn to the shape of an hour glass. Fortunately the shift rod that comes out of the transmission is a lot harder than the coupler or pin, so the wear is most on parts that can be easily replaced. I replaced #7, and 13-16 and it was just about like new.

 

So... has anyone taken a stock "non-weighted" shift knob and made it "weighted"? Looks like the sweet spot on these things is around 1 - 1.2 pounds. Is it possible to add lead somewhere and increase the weight?
