The single disk is standard but as of the September repricing, the US 2007 550i does not have an option for a 6 disk changer in the glove box. You cannot order it with the car as a factory or port install. You would instead have to pay twice as much for a dealer to install it.
Thanks. But, just so I'm clear, I presume that means I'll have a single disc, but no changer?

I can live with that.

What was it you wanted to know originally? I assume you knew that all e60s come with CD audio playback capability as standard. It would be inconceivable for a car in this class to do otherwise.

I hope!

My original question was whether the single disc CD slot had been eliminated.

I can live without the 6 disc. I was going to be very disappointed if there was no single disc (or changer) in the dash. The whole 6 disc in the glove box (or in the trunk) is a hassle. I dont know why BMW cant come up with a multi-disc player in the dash, like several other manufacturers.

However, i think my question was answered, in that there will STILL be a single disc in the dash.

The impression I got when I ordered my car in October, was that they are trying to move people away from the 6-disc changer to the IPOD adapter. In fact, I was told originally that they were no longer putting the changer in the glove box, and it would be in the trunk. This turned out to be wrong but I believe they were considering it becuase I heard it from BMWUSA when I was trying to sort the whole thing out. The fact that they took it off the Premium Sound option package (at an incremental cost of about $400) and made it a dealer installed stand alone option at a cost of over $900, told me that they are discouraging us from getting them.

I went with the IPOD adapter (you can't get both) and have been happy with the system. From what I read, the CD changer was difficult to access and this way I can get a buch of CD's on the IPOD at one time and play them through the cars sound system.

The e60 forum does it again! I took delivery of my brand new 550i last week and was wondering the same thing about a cd changer. Question answered! I just love the mp3 aux. connector. If it's a choice between a changer and the mp3 then go with the mp3!

I just love your car ownership pattern:

1970 1600
1976 2002 after 6 years
1984 733i after 8 years
1993 740i after 9 years
2004 545i after 11 years

Then look what happened!!

Yup, the 545i was a real piece of junk. I am staying the course, however, with the 550i. So far it seems to be a completely different vehicle. Tighter, smoother, quieter, much more BMW-like! Hope it continues to be up to the standard I have grown to expect.
