Update: The shop foreman at the dealer (great guy) advised of a recent service bulletin (SIB 24 03 09) which sure looks like it addresses this problem. The repair is (surprise) a new version of code using the new BMW sotware system--ISTA. Dealer installed it today for free. (It is covered under the new car and CPO warranties.) I will have to wait for tomorrow morning for a cold start test-- but so far the car drives like new. Cleaner, better shifts. Faster. I don't know if it's the new program or the fact that the transmission was cleared of what it had learned-- but whatever it is, I hope it lasts. Here is a link to the bulletin: http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/bullet...mp/B240309g.htm

After driving the car cold this am, I must say again that what ever the dealer did in that SIB has made the car drive much more spirited in "Drive"-- like new again. The only drawback is that the judder is still there when COLD at about 20mph @ 1200 rpm when slightly accelerating after coasting, BUT it definitely goes away after warm up (used to be more persistent) and the car (again) is more spirited. Frankly, the judder feels like less of a tranny issue and more of a cold throttle issue. At this point, I plan to let it go, as I am still smiling from my morning drive.
PS: I asked the shop foreman about the 25 sec. tranny reset trick, he said that they used to do that on the old models, but that he does not believe it applies to newer models (and that he will be a little disappointed in BMW if it does, as they require the techs to hook-up the car to the computer to reset. I guess he wants his 30 minutes back.) I asked him to run it by the factory engineer who will be at his dealership this week. He said he would. I will post something, if I learn anything more.
