Default Shift transmission to park error

2007 550i automatic. Just started getting this message tonight. When placing in park I have to play with shifter to get the park light on. The shift button on the lever feels a little stuff as well. Even after I get the park light on and am able to shut down and remove the key the error light comes on.
All gears are working properly.

Anyone else had this error?

Shift-interlock cable that goes from shifter to the brake pedal may need to be either adjusted or replaced.

Take your shifter off and then put a little lube on it. Put it back on and then give it a slam down so it locks in place and see if that helps.

I'll give that a try thanks. Is there any info out there on how to remove all the center console trim?

Solved
I lifted up the shift boot and found a quarter interfering in the mechanism. I guess I have to stop using the ashtray as a coin holder.

Have a good indy shop close to home. He told me to check for spills under that area.

There is also a solenoid that locks the shifter until the brake pedal is depressed. Sticky drink spills can hang it up.
