I was looking through the Service menu yesterday evening and something caught my eye.

I went >Information>Service. I was looking at the miles to go for the different maintence items. It was Oil Service then Rear Brake Pads and then Front Brake Pads. It showed 9,000 miles to go for the rear and 13,000 for the Front. However, I could swear before it was Oil Service then Front Brake Pads and then Rear Brake Pads. Could some people check their cars and post how theirs are??? I would think front pads would go out faster than rear pads. Am I wrong? Really with the car being 50/50 weight distribution, they should wear nearly evenly.

Any help would be great. I just checked the owners manual and it shows it rear pads first then front pads.

Thanks

Front pads will always wear faster due to forward inertia. The thickness of the pads will also be a factor. I don't know, but the thickness may vary between front and back.

That's correct!
Front should come first...

That is what I thought but in my car and in the manual the rear pads are listed before the front pads. Can some people check their cars and post what they find on here?

Thanks

Front should come first, however the front disks and pads are larger then the rear.

Front DIAMETER x THICKNESS: 12.8 x 1.18 inch
Rear DIAMETER x THICKNESS: 12.6 x 0.79 inch

And the oild change should definately be before either of those wear out.

That depends on how you drive...

True, but you would have to drive VERY hard. Like bring it up to 150MPH then slam on the brakes between every light to have them wear out before 10k-12k miles when the oil normally gets changed.

Don't those thicknesses represent the rotor and not the pads? By the way, I agree that the front pads may be thicker and that may answer the question as to why the rears need replacing earlier.

Rudy: That is one thought. I never thought about the rear pads being thinner than the front pads. That sure is using the ka-noodle!
