Seems like there are two Service bulletins out for V8 E60's out now.

The other one would be this.

Even it this doesn't consern me, thanks cobradav

Any clue what "Excessive idle speed fluctuations (1100-1300 rpm) on a cold start for the first 30 seconds of engine operation, " could mean?

I notice that my car starts up at a very high idle and just about 30 seconds later will drop down significantly - or when I put it in gear. No dieseling however.

Although I haven't (yet) experienced this, I assume the manual transmission is exempt based on the description where "transmission is in P or N position"??? Interesting that only a 200rpm change in idle speed would be considered "excessive". Any clarification to the above bulletin regarding what transmission types are truly affected? Or is this solely for Steptronic-equipped cars?

Hi Rr:

I guess the following includes the E60 550i: "E60 (5 Series) 545i, E63 and E64 (6 Series) 645Ci and 645CiC, E65 and E66 (7 Series) 745i and 745Li, E53 (X5) 4.4i and 4.8is equipped with N62 engine."

The exposition is not clear to me, but, IMO, your inference is correct unless the N62 engine is not the one that's in the 550i or there is some difference in the 4.8 N62's in the E53 X5's and the E60 550i's.

N62 = 4.4L
N62TU = 4.8L

So this bulletin is for the 4.8L engine in the chassis identified and not the e53 4.8L engine which has a different code

You mean a manual transmission has no "N"? My truck has, but I never noticed that BMW manual trannies were missing a neutral position (N) . I do not believe this is exclusive to a specific tranny. And yes a rapid change in RPM is unusual at idle for a V8 engine. These engines with this symptom usually run smooth at start, then sound like they will stumble and die, sputtering a little, and then smooth out again after a bit and may never again exhibit this symptom until really cold again. It is pretty obvious to those that have the symptom(s).

[/quote]Thanks, so this bulletin does not apply to the 550i, right?

No, the other way around -it does apply to the 550.
