As my Senior Moments become more and more frequent and in greater depth, I thought about putting the plastic emergency key in a magnetic keybox and hiding it somewhere arround the vehicle, just in case I lose my keys while out. I know, the E60 is mostly aluminum and plastic but there is some steel "somewhere."

But then I thought, most car thieves know where to look for such things so it probably isn't a good idea in the long run. I expect most people will not answer this question for obvious reasons, but the poll is noncommital so here goes:

I don't want to answer just no. I want to answer O M G .. N O ....

I wouldn't be surprised if you get a dispute with the insurance company if it were to get stolen and recovered/crashed and the key still in the ignition switch. The insurers are always looking for reasons to not pay out. Seeing that the thief had the key will be hard to explain. I doubt "but I left the key on the outside of the car in an easy-to-reach secret box" would be helping your case at all.

Much better to just have one place in the house where you always park your key so there's never any "where did I leave the key" moments. It's only ever in one place so there's no doubt. I have a box where I always park my key, wallet, cellphone (it's not an iphone so I don't have to charge it twice a day), a comb, my house key and my watch.

My wife keeps the extra key in her pocketbook, and we leave the matching keyfob in the glovebox in its holder.

You can start the car if you have both.

You have to put it in the key adaptor which is in the glove box.

I keep my key inside of the shark fin antenna on the roof. Please do not tell anyone, as this will be a secret between you and me.
