Secondary Air Bypass
 
I was thinking today about the problematic nature of the secondary air ports within the heads clogging on the N62 engine. I am convinced someone NEEDS to make a conversion kit that will replace the metal tube between the valve and the head, and plug the head. The new tube coming off the valve would be a simple flexible metal line say 1/2" in size that goes down and taps directly into the exhaust manifold like most cars.... done.

No? I think a kit like this would accomplish the same goal while completely eliminating the original design flaw.

What cha think?

Actually... You could simply tap into the original tube and attach the new flex line... possibly block the unused portion going to the head.

What design flaw? :huh:
I have 320,000 kms on my 2005 N62 engine and have no signs of secondary air ports clogging. I have had the plastic portion of the secondary air flow conduits break, but that was easily repaired.

Really? seems to be a common issue which throws secondary 'insufficient flow' codes. Does on my 545i with 85,000 miles.

The secondary air being injected into the exhaust via 4 tiny holes right above the exhaust valve prone to clogging up.... I consider a design flaw. Lol

Most cars inject the air into the exhaust manifold via one decent sized pipe... Not 4 tiny holes inside of the heads.

Lol Still, how come I have 205,000 miles on my 2005 545 with no problems? I believe this "common" problem has more to do with how the car is started from cold (the secondary air is used only for about 30 secs on startup) and the state of the exhaust seals, which BTW, I also have no signs of wear or leaks.

There is probably a good engineering reason for doing it this way - remember these are not most cars!

I wouldn't think so... the air only needs to be present pre-cat to heat up the cat faster. There shouldn't be any reason why it cannot be administered at the manifold rather then inside the exhaust port of the head.

Me thinks that you have been unduly influenced by marketing - Marketing 101, create a problem, then offer the solution.
Also, you have not answered my question about why I haven't had any such problems and probably many others haven't had the problem. BTW, the added air is NOT to help heat up the catalyst, but to burn off the HCs before the catalyst can do its job when it reaches operating temperature.

I would suspect you are one lucky individual for having 205k without issue. Times running out! I do not have an answer as to why some issues with cars will arise at different milage from one car to the next. :/

In addition, this is about the ONLY motor I know of that injects the air into the head. I do not believe it will make a dif as long as its pre cat.
