Hi

I have a september 04 530d. My sat nav isnt working properly. The business satnav doesnt recognise the original 04 sat nav disc when inserted. I suspect that some of the flimsy white plastic backing on the disc itself has come off in the cd reader unit ( under the climate control) as this was torn and i cant account for all the missing bits. Interestingly it can read and play music cd's when inserted although occasionally stuggles to recognise some tracks.

In addition i had all the idrive software updated following another issue with the control units in may 08 so I dont know if this would have any impact. Any guidance for diagnosing the cause of the problem would be welcome.

If for example some of the plastic backing has got into the drive and is affecting the optical reader any ideas how to access the unit to examine or replace it would also be welcome.

thanks

In one of my former cars I had the 609 Nav Professional. It read the cd's fine, but not my Nav-DVD (and it was hardly scratched).

Since the CCC is quite expensive, I tried several cleaning cd's and looked for some advice on forums. As a last attempt I downloaded the latest DVD and it worked! The 'old' original still didn't work, but he new one did, so it must have been the DVD itself which caused the problem (although not damaged)!

thanks - when you say downloaded the dvd - do you mean you bought the latest version and inserted it into the drive ? or you downloaded something off the net onto a blank dvd ?

I just downloaded it from a Newsserver, because I didn't know it was going to work.

You could also explain the situation to your dealership and make a deal with them: first try a new DVD, if it works, you'll buy it! Here in The Netherlands you can trade in your original DVD and get a 45% discount or so on a new DVD.
Don't know where you're from but we have to pay approx. ? 280,- (about $ 410,-) for a new DVD. With trading your original DVD, you still have to pay ? 150,- (approx. $ 219,-).

for information

dealer said the issue was down to some of the cd backing coming off in the reader and obscuring the optical reader ...they managed to remove most of it and get it to work which is just as well as they wanted ?1800 for a new unit !!

Apparently its a common problem caused when people extract the dvd to inser music cd's
