Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced rust appearing on the rear drums. I spoke to my local dealer Cotwold BMW and he stated that it is normal and it is not covered under the warranty. My car is only a month old and it looks aweful. Is there anything out there that I could use to 1. Get rid of the rust and 2. Paint/Spray on to stop it comming back. Car is 520d Msport on an 09 Plate.

my thoughts exactly. if you're from an area with alot of moisture in the air, and you let your car sit for a few days, rust will accumulate on the discs. it is common. just drive the car and the rust will disappear.....and btw, welcome!!

My 2005 530i and so the other E60s have similar rust on the DISC after washing or rain and left overnight or longer. No so bad in dry climate like California etc.. less humidity level goes up higher than say, 80%. Never knew of a way to rid of it. My dealer haven't discover any method of preventing the rust on a disc. May be a power disc like higher end Brembo will do, but unless you remap the 530i with light weight pulleys with up to 300hp, you don't need it. I've been able to tolerate it since 2004 E60 520i and since 2005 530i.
SAFE DRIVING GUYS and enjoy the car.

I think he is talking about the hub in which the wheel attaches. So looking at it would be the hub/drum between the wheel and disc brake
Mine are rusty

I think this is correct, mine are all rusted and dealer told me the same. When you get your breaks replaced you get new hubs, calliper clips and those are the 2 parts that rust. Just have to wait until 80k miles and you will be good! For a month or 2 anyway

This was kind of surprising to me though, almost like bad publicity for BMW as someone admire.....wait is that rust? KnowwhatImean?

You are going to have to search in here about painting your calipers! In one of the write-ups it explains about cleaning the rust off the hub. When I painted my calipers black, I took the time to clean the rust off the hub with some rust remover. Then I painted spray painted the hub silver. Now when I wash my car it looks clean . Check out the write-ups, so you can get a feel for the products used. Then make your choice.

Rust on the hubs/drums is 'normal' though IMHO not really acceptable for a car of this class.

By the way, we do have drums on the rear as we have brake shoes for the handbrake.
