Well, I'm glad Rudy straightened me out on where the hand brake drums are on later models, my recollection was from 70s 2002s, up through 87 535 models. However, that has NOTHING to do with the initial enquiry, other than to identify the surface in question.
From what I can see, my suggestion above, that whatever oxidation/rust is on that wheel hub is depositited there when it is scrubbed off the disc still explains it. Yes? No?
Now, further question: What rubs that hub exterior and creates that scrubbed "band" around it?
Cheers,
Ray Hull

Ray, from what I've seen in pics and on my car, the rust you see isn't from rust deposits or anything rubbing , I think the rust is just a result of a harsh wheel cleaner eating the paint off the hub in a very uneven fashion...

That is on your rim dood, there is NO drum right under there.
From harsh wheel cleaner do doubt.
If you have a shop lift, take off the wheel, remove the oxidation and polish.
It is NOT that big of a deal...
Just torque your lug nuts to the correct value on reinstallation.

You can still remove the wheel and attack it with some metal polish or a dremmel with wire wheel attachment.
This is coming from someone who has been known to remove wheels on occasion and repaint the wheel wells.
But then again I also rotate my own tires...

My brake discs were so rusty the, other day, on my 6months old. I followed the procedure of driving the car slowly for about 1-2 min with the handbrake active. Boy it did magic. My brake discs look like new. Thanks forum
