After almost 19,000 miles on my Bridgstone RE050A runflats, I must say I am reasonably impressed with the tread life when compared to my experience with high performance tires on my old 540i.
However, it is time to get a new set of tires. I knew this day was comming where I would have to make a decision to either keep the run flats with their rougher ride but security in the event of a flat, especially if traveling at high speed. I do like the sense of security when traveling at over 100 mph knowing that if the tire blows out I have a good chance to maintain control. Also, not having a full size spare tire sucks, and in the event of a flat you can just keep driving, no need to get out and change the tire.
But, conversely, the run flats are heavier and produce a rougher ride. How much rougher I can't say, I just know that from the many on this forum that swear by getting rid of their run flats.
So what would you do, keep the run flats or change to a conventional tire?
Thanks for your opinions.

Been driving for 28 years and I have had zero punctures.
I do not like the bad handling of the RF's, especially on a nice BMW.
Voted NO - once again.

you've already had experience with runflats v. hi-perf tires and it sounds like treadwear and safety are your concerns...you've made your choice.
i personally had the same bridgestone runflats and liked them. but when i changed to my hi-perf, i loved them! just my $0.02. not saying that treadwear and safety are a concern for me.

My Bridgestone runflats have been great thru 14k miles. I don't have any issue with the ride being rough, and I'm guessing will last until 20-25k miles. I wonder if these tires may be significantly better than those installed on the first years of the e60s??

Only 26 votes. Come on guys...and gals, don't be afraid to cast a vote. So far I see an overwhelming percentage that would change to conventional tires.

Voted for conventional tyre. Three basic reasons:
1. Price (including the limited repairability of RFT) and availability
2. Ride quality and NOISE!!!
3. I've never had a puncture on a motorway/high speed road. Generally, tyres pick up stuff driving at low speed on dirty city roads; as long as you keep an eye on tyre condition and pressure, I think the chances of having a catastrophic blast at speed are very very remote.

Bad handling meaning road noice, tendency to tramlinging and
worse suspension behavior cause of a lot of extra non-suspended
weight.

I'm on my second E60, both with sports suspension and 18" . I started with the first one on runflats, and changed to normal tyres after 18k miles - the runflats are, I suppose, OK, but its all about the comparison.... when you try the E60 on normal tyres, you realise the the E60 can be hugely improved - quieter, more compliant handling...and in the UK our smaller roads need all the compliance you can get - 30% better life, and 30% cheaper....
