So I just recently purchased a BMW 545i 2005 and hope to get to know some of you frequent active members on this forum.

I purchased some used OEM BMW rims with run flat tires on it. Potenza RE050A to be exact.

My stock tires are 17 inch rim with non run flat tires.

So my question is it a good idea to switch out new purchased rims to non run flat tires? My concern is I'm guessing my car probably does have a run flat sensors on it and I am afraid that if it does go flat, I wouldn't know it's been punctured and it could put myself/passengers in danger.

Any thoughts?

The rims I purchased are Staggered BMW style 124 picture reference attached.

your TPMS can be transferred over to your non run flats. It's just a sensor that wrap around to the inside of your rim.

Does the 2005 545i have TPMS sensors?

The 2004 doesn't. Not sure about 2005, but my guess would be no. It detects a flat tire by variation in rotation rate.

if you go into your idrive, you might just see if its in your menu. I'm not sure what year they started TPMS for our cars.

Also - you can put NON run-flats on wheels designed for run-flats - but not the other way round. There's an extra lip around the rim for run-flats, that keeps them on the wheel while you're driving without air. You're basically driving on stiff sidewalls.

I guess I will keep the original run flat tires on the rims I just purchased.

Pre 2007 e60s do NOT use TPMS; they have FTM; The information is plainly explained in the owner's manual.The system uses the ABS system to monitor tire rotation to determine if there are variations that would indicate one or more tires has lost pressure. Beginning in 2007, BMWs with RFTs were fitted with TPMS in the wheels and receivers in the wheel wells. The system actually detected variations in the actual tire inflation pressure and reported variations that exceeded pre-set (via iDrive) limits.

So the car has FTM instead so should i keep the run flats? what's everyone recommendation?

run flats ride very hard. non run flats will be more comfortable. e60's have a spare tire, so run flats aren't really needed. unlike the e90's which do not carry a spare. 19" tires on my e90 with non run flats rode better than the stock 16's with run flats.
