run away engine.......how would you stop it?

From what I can figure about the toyotas, the pedal mechanically sticks in a down position. Is it possible to merely put your foot/hand UNDER the depressed pedal and lift it up?? If not, then the recall is not addressing the real issue.
These are drive by wire systems (also BMW) and there are no cables/linkages etc, but rather an electrical connection to the throttle computer. The pedal is made more difficult to press to give a mechanical "feel".
Also the toyota pedal hangs from the top while the BMW's is from the floor. The BMW way avoids the mat issue, if nothing else.
BTW the term "runaway engine" typically refers to diesels where the engine cant be stopped normally and actually fuels itself by its own crankcase oil.

Like you said you were going slow... under i think 5-7 miles you can stop the engine by pressing once but at higher speeds it requires holding the start/stop button 2-3 secs
