Hold it for 2-3 seconds.

From what I can figure about the toyotas, the pedal mechanically sticks in a down position. Is it possible to merely put your foot/hand UNDER the depressed pedal and lift it up?? If not, then the recall is not addressing the real issue.
These are drive by wire systems (also BMW) and there are no cables/linkages etc, but rather an electrical connection to the throttle computer. The pedal is made more difficult to press to give a mechanical "feel".
Also the toyota pedal hangs from the top while the BMW's is from the floor. The BMW way avoids the mat issue, if nothing else.

BTW the term "runaway engine" typically refers to diesels where the engine cant be stopped normally and actually fuels itself by its own crankcase oil.

Pressing the start/Stop button once will stops the engine in mine. I tried of course at low speeds with shifter in D and car moving.

Like you said you were going slow... under i think 5-7 miles you can stop the engine by pressing once but at higher speeds it requires holding the start/stop button 2-3 secs

When you push the button, while stopped it goes into P.
I hope there is a lockout, otherwise it would not be pretty to put the car in P at 60mph!!!

Be the first on your block to have ejector seats installed! Warning, do not attempt to exit vehicle under power lines, trees, and overpasses. Major fail.
