My Ride: 2009 535xi, short shifter, no CDV
Technology getting advanced and I can not image diesel can rev. to 5K rpm nowadays.
Diesel require to have more rigid(thick) cylinder body and heavy pistons.... This is due to the much higher compression ratio. ( 22:1 and BMW might be more since it is a BMW .... , I did not check, just image )
If you rev. too high, the engine itself will explode.. (I mean if engine management did not put limiter there)

Gotta be more of a gear ratio issue since I've owned cars from 4 to 8 cylinders in various confgurations (I4, Flat 6, V8, I6, etc.), and the rpm at cruising speed 70-75 did not correlate directly according to displacement.

My Ride: Volvo V70 D5 Summum
Resently owned a
530D -05 Orentic Blue
Sport Seats and Sport steering wheel.
My 530D -05 runs 2000rpm at 75mph on the sixth gear.
It Seams to be a heigh rpm for a 525 if thats the car you have.

My current car is a 6 speed manual and the Mustang GT was a V8.. not a V6.
I'm wondering if it has to do with a larger engine? Maybe the 550i or 545i had lower RPM range when cruising at 60 - 70 mph?

fyi my car's RPM is 3000 at 100 mph. (with v8). Before i used to have 525 and with 3000 rpm's i was going 80 mph. Talking all about cruising speed

yes it is different. with v8 rpm's will be lower then with v6 at the same cruising speed. logicaly thinking: to pruduce same amount of push, 8 people will use less effort then 6 right? same with cylinders.

Since your old 525i had 3K rpm at 80 I guess mine is normal then.
