I use to have a 1998 Mustang GT and when driving at around 65 - 70 mph in 5th gear, the RPM would hover around 1,500 - 2,000 rpm.
However on my current car if I was at that speed in 6th gear, the rpm is just over 3,000. Could this be because the I6 engines are high revving versus the mustang engine not high revving? Could someone educate me?

Your car will never rev that high due to it being a diesel. I'm sure your diesel redlines somewhere around 3500 rpm's doesn't it?
It is not a mere difference of gear ratio's... its the difference between a gasoline and diesel engine.

I think dieslels go a little further than 3500. Probably 4500.

You probably know better than I do. I've never driven a BMW diesel before, I was just going from my low level experience of the bigger diesel trucks and an e320 CDI.

Are you driving in DS mode? I noticed that my car will not shift into OD/5th gear unless I'm in D.

My current car is a 6 speed manual and the Mustang GT was a V8.. not a V6.

I'm wondering if it has to do with a larger engine? Maybe the 550i or 545i had lower RPM range when cruising at 60 - 70 mph?

At 80mph in 6th I see about 2500-2600 rpm

6 cylinders usually run at higher revs than 8s. My 545i cruises are around 1500-2000 at 70mph
