They go crazy on oil like the detail guys do on wax on autopia. There is people who literally take engines and do tests with different oils in them and then send them to Blackstone for results. Then will take the engines apart and look for wear. I mean it just goes on and on. These are guys literally with backyard/garage/basement set ups that do it as hobby. In the end I think they go a little over board. Can't tell me there is much difference from the top name brands in oil vary a whole lot from each others counterpart product.

Ive been a Castrol man all my life and without issues on any car so far, and it just so happens the BMW recommends Castrol, so I guess I lucked out. No sense messing with perfection...haha

But I too am a Castrol guy, it is recommended and it is cheap at the Wal*Mart

Is Royal Purple even SAE certified? (or am I confusing it with AMS oil) And most importantly, does it meet the BMW LL98/01 specs? Not many oils do. As far as I know there are only a few on the market that meet the High Temp/ High Shear requirement as specified by BMW. If the back label does not say BMW LL98/01 approved, then keep looking. Sometimes you'll have to jump to a slightly different grade to find an oil that meets the BMW spec, for example Castrol Syntec, but 0w30 or 5w40. I know for a fact that Mobil 1 5w30 is not approved but 5w40 is.

OOOPS... I mis-spoke.

I have run Rotella T in 5w-40 (vice Royal Purple as I stated incorrectly), and it does not carry the BMW approval. I'll be buying a quality synthetic that does meet BMW requirements.

I emailed Royal Purple and asked them about the "BMW LL98 / 01"....hoop-la, and this is what they responded with.

The BMW spec they are suggesting are oils that have paid a licensing fee to BMW to display that approval. Typically this is an oil manufactured in Europe and imported to the US driving the cost up without any performance advantages over the US Manufactured oils that have not agreed to pay a licensing fee to BMW. This is a fundamental difference in the way oils are approved - in the US - there is a general spec agreed upon by the OEM's while in Europe, each manufacturer sets there own specification - such as VW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, BMW, Opel, Fiat, and Renault - each setting their own approval standards.

We recommend using either the RP 5W30 for your BMW 4.8L V8 32 valve engine - this takes 8.5 quarts.
This meets and exceeds the performance levels of the BMW LL98 / 01 specifications although we can not list these on the packaging as we have not paid the licensing fees to do so.

I have also been using Shell Rotella T 5w-40 on my current and previous vehicles.
This is the first time I'm running Shell Rotella T on the 545.

Shell Rotella T has a very good review in motorcycle world (I use it on my Triumph Speed Triple) and also Subaru EJ25 (STi) world and it has a very good price point for a good quality synthetic.

Any feedback on Rotella T on your Bimmer? Praise/complaints?

I understand that this oil is a "diesel" grade oil and I'm still wondering whether it has any effect on our car.
