I have had this happen occationally - once every 12-15 cold starts maybe. Mostly it just starts up smooth as silk.
I have not yet had any software upgrades in 11 months of ownership and 10,000 miles, but I expect to update to the latest release (v23) at the annual service interval sometime in October.
I typically buy BP Amoco Ultimate crystal clear premium gasoline from the same gas station near home, and some times when I experience rough starts it is because I filled up with another brand. Two weeks ago I filled up in Indiana (Shell) and I had some consistent rough starts with that tank, but once I went back to Amoco I have not had any. This is the second Indiana gas fill-up where I've had rough starts. I wonder if they load in more than 10% Ethanol?

I always have used v-power from shell, I wonder if thats what it is?

My 06 has been rough idling when first starting up in the morning from day one and even with the CIP20 update it does not help. I hate starting the car up in the morning and driving it the first 500 yards because it feels like an old jalopy. Once its up and running once the rest of the day it drives smooth. I wonder if the 750 has this same issue.

Ditto to all of the above - I've just passed 2000 km on my 550, and assumed that it was a break-in phenomenon until I read this post. As long as this 15 second phenomenon doesn't represent a significant engine/injection problem, I guess I can live with it. Just turn up the Logic7!

Yeap. Sounds like a Panzer but after a while it idles smooth. No problem, been discussed many times Do a search. Best guess I've heard is BMW has the engine running very lean at startup to lower emissions.

20.x corrected the bouncing idle on cold start. I had Progman 22.x put on my car for this and now I have the rough idle on cold start. I actually kind of like it as it sounds kind of tough when you first fire it up in the morning (reminds me of my first V8 car as a teenager). The dealer acknowledged that the car had a rough idle after 22.x and said that 23.x was supposed to take care of it.
I will say that I think I'm getting better mileage with 22.x than 19.x and yes, I also am using Shell gas.

Silver Gray Metallic with Gray Leather. Added Red rear reflectors. Swapped stock Style 124 wheels and Bridgestone run-flat tires for BMW Style 125 5-Double Spoke wheels, 8" x 19" front, 9.5" x 19" rear with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, 245/40YR-19 front and 275/30YR-19 rear.
In reading through the Progman 23.0 write-up poosted by cobradav, I see no mention of the rough idle at cold start-up issue. Disappointing, if true.

The rough idle is all part of the fuel saving meausres. This is normal. Most cars idle around 1.5k to 2k rpm during the cold start up to warm up the engine. This wastes a lot of fuel. BMW does just the opposite on cold starts, thus trying to save fuel. I was told this by my dealer and he said it's normal. As most of the replies have indicated, the rough idle is there only for a few seconds and it goes away. Mine does it too. With the cost of gas rising, I don't mind the rough idle if it saves me some gas.

When I first start up my car in the morning, regardless of tempature, it idles very rough. This only happens on the very first start up of the day. Kind of sounds like the injectors are blocked and continues for about 15 seconds and then everything is fine. I had the dealer look at it a couple of months ago and he said that it was a known problem without any current fix available. Anyone else have this problem and if so any fixes out there.
