When I first start up my car in the morning, regardless of tempature, it idles very rough. This only happens on the very first start up of the day. Kind of sounds like the injectors are blocked and continues for about 15 seconds and then everything is fine. I had the dealer look at it a couple of months ago and he said that it was a known problem without any current fix available. Anyone else have this problem and if so any fixes out there.

Yes definately, I have that issue especially if the car isnt started for 2 or 3 days.

It smooths out in 15 seconds.

Almost feels like its missing a cylinder, or the oil isnt fully lubing engine.

I have very few miles on mine and I thought it was a break in issue.

Once it goes away there is no hesitation at all.

Also happens on my Alpina, the more so if it's been left longer or outside, or if the weather's colder. Manifests itself as a series of automated throttle stabs, with bursts of up to 2000rpm. The neighbours probably think I'm a right **** at 5.30 on a Monday morning, especially given the B5's, erm, uncompromising exhaust note...

Thats odd... CIP or Progman 20 should have fixed that... we're up to Progman 23 now.

The following software errors were corrected with the release of Progman 20.01.00 (Target data Status E060-05-12-510).

While driving, the SMG control module switches to emergency program. SMG Fault Code 5101 (Hex) "Analyze hydraulic sensor" is stored. (E60 M5 only) Refer to SI B23 01 06.

Check Engine Light is on, DME FC "2F4F vehicle speed plausibility" (N62TU only).

The following software errors were corrected with the release of Progman 20.00.00 (Target data Status E060-05-12-500).

Poor Idle quality after a cold start. N62TU engine.

Engine juddering/idle speed surging when it is cold. N52 engine.

Engine pinging under light load. N62TU engine.

After programming the CID (Central Information Display) using Progman V19.x, the CID is blank and fault "A469 Internal Electronics Failure" is stored. Progman 20.00.00 prevents this programming failure. If the fault already exists the CID needs to be replaced.

Had this done in my '06 550i shortly after I took delivery. Did not fix the problem of rough idle after cold start. I have had Progman 22.0 installed two months ago,but it did not address this problem. I saw a post on another forum from a 550i owner whose dealer told him BMW would have a software fix in September. Interesting, if true.

Yeap. Sounds like a Panzer but after a while it idles smooth. No problem, been discussed many times Do a search. Best guess I've heard is BMW has the engine running very lean at startup to lower emissions.

That would be consistent with what a tuner told me a while ago - though for a different engine altogether (M50 / E36 325i).

I have the same problem. Here is a link to a SIB that talks about this.

SIB122705

Sounds like CIP 22 and 23 try to fix it.

Does anyone know if CIP23 is out yet? The SIB says September...

I have had this happen occationally - once every 12-15 cold starts maybe. Mostly it just starts up smooth as silk.

I have not yet had any software upgrades in 11 months of ownership and 10,000 miles, but I expect to update to the latest release (v23) at the annual service interval sometime in October.

I typically buy BP Amoco Ultimate crystal clear premium gasoline from the same gas station near home, and some times when I experience rough starts it is because I filled up with another brand. Two weeks ago I filled up in Indiana (Shell) and I had some consistent rough starts with that tank, but once I went back to Amoco I have not had any. This is the second Indiana gas fill-up where I've had rough starts. I wonder if they load in more than 10% Ethanol?
