Default Rough engine vibration at idle!

I have a 2008 550i with 90k miles. Does anyone have any problems with rough engine vibration idle problems with their 5 series?

I used to have the vibrations at idle when I stopped at a stop light or red light. Took it in and they walnut blasted to clean out the carbon on my intake. That helped when I was driving and would stop, but unfortunately still experience the vibrations on a cold engine when starting in the morning. I have a 2010 535XI.

I would start with simple maintenance:

1. new spark plugs
2. check\replace ignition coils
3. Pressure Regulating Valves

quick manual how to replace them.

Are you getting any errors on the computer? Check Engine light? Did you replace the battery or alternator recently?

Walnut blasting is only for N54 turbo engines. OP - maybe you can try a fuel injection cleaner and see if that helps. If it does, most dealers will offer a proper fuel injection cleaning service which might be worth.

Hi again,

545i and 550i have almost identical engines and because of that the will have similar issues causing rough idle

Where 535i is a completely different animal. Those engines have notorious problems with high pressure fuel pump and injectors.

Damaged injectors or bad pump will cause rough idle and even the best injector cleaner won’t fix that. ;-)

If you are DIY kind of person I would recommend few things:

1. Call your dealer and check if your car had HPFP replaced (they can check it by VIN)

2. check your spark plugs – compare them to each other. If one (or more) is much cleaner than others (and possibly “wet” from extra unburned fuel) that means that one of your injectors is bad.

3. If spark plugs look bad – replace them

4. Look for vacuum leaks – all those plastic vent pipes like to crack

5. Of course new air filter could be also a good idea.

I also have a vibration at idle. New oil and plugs so it isn't that. What I have boiled it down to is my power steering. I have been getting low fluid levels when it is really cold which go away once is is warmed up. While at a light I was moving the steering wheel left to right and the vibration at idle became more pronounced when power steering was under load. I'm going to top the fluid off today and see if that smooths it out. Hopefully no permanent damage to the system. When I was doing the brakes a few months back I noticed the bushing around the anti sway bar was wet so I suspect a leak in the system.

Just FYI, guys, the WORST case scenario for a rough idle culprit is the engine bracket bolt. DEFINITELY have it checked. Also, have your motor mounts looked at.

I posted a DIY on the mass airflow sensor cleaning way back - it might be helpful too
