No, you do not have to replace anything. Open any door, on the body side run you fingers along the frame. You will feel where it is indented for the "clamp" piece of the rack. The other piece fits snug on the channel on the roof. A nice rubber foot protects the paint. I have used mine a lot of times, skis, snowboards and surfboards without any problems. The racks are easy to put on and take off, money well spent.
Nice description, Juan. The rubber strip fits right in the groove on top of the rack

I have the roof rack but haven't put it on yet... I do have one question for you though:
After using the rack for a while and you take it off, does the door still seal well (in terms of liquids and noise)? I'm a little concerned that the clamp of the rack will deform the rubber seal of the door.

Thanks all for your help.

Perfect - thanks for taking the trouble to post pics & explain. Exactly what I needed.

I was given a bum steer by salesman - who told me you remove a small part of the trim strip.
Looking at an E90 in the showroom I reckon he was thinking E60 was the same.

The rubber seems to have a good "memory". It returns to its flush original seal within an hour of removing the racks. I have left my racks on for two or three weeks at a time without any long term change to the rubber. I usually take off my racks when I'm done using them, due to wind noise. They are very easy to put on and take off, couple of minutes

petem77 - Glad to help, anytime
