I just noticed a similar chip on Saturday about halfway up one of the spokes on my left rear 124. I have no idea how or when it happened, just that it wasn't there the last time I'd washed my car. I guess maybe I passed a car that squished a stone or something and it went horizontal? Luckily my car is silver and the touch-up paint is basically the same color as the wheel.

The same crap that flies up and hits the bodywork can fly up and hit the rims. Most stuff I see flying down the freeway towards me has some sort of lateral velocity component.

This is normal as time passes, just part of wheel ownership so to speak. I also have a good number of chips on my wheels.
