Default RIP Water Pump (I think)

I think my water pump failed today on my 2007 530d.

After a drive of about 30 minutes at around 110kph I pulled into a service station and had some lunch.

30 minutes later when I started the car everything seemed good until I tried to turn the wheel - never felt such resistance on a steering wheel - it was glued.

Got it back in the parking bay, popped the bonnet and for sure the only thing rotating was the crank pulley. Couldn't miss the rubber burning smell either.

Tilt tray home then cut the belt off to see what was bad. Everything seems mobile but the water pump pulley resists a bit and seems to have some movement sideways. I was expecting something a bit more dramatic.

Car only has 90000km so I guess it must be an age thing or a crap part - oh well.

New pump is about $200 and I already have spare belts and coolant.

Do people just change them proactively?

Does coolant ever get in the bearings and kill them?

Change the t-stat while your add it as well, mine failed at 69,200 miles 525xi 2006. Check your hoses.Glad I had warranty since I just recently purchased the vehicle. Car is in shop for maintenance $2300 is the estimate for various items, beautiful car, love it but damn high maintenance! Good luck, bye genuine parts!
