I'm fairly new to this site and have been enjoying the posts by all, I'm hopefull some of you can shed some lite on this topic. I have a 2004 540i its three weeks old and I love this car. But like many BMW owners, I can be critical too, I think the wheels need to be rebalanced because I do have some vibration at some speeds that go away if I speed up or slow down. But I also think the ride quality is slightly rougher than it should be. The car came with Dunlap run flats as part of the sports package, this is my first experience with these tires, I'm not sure if I'm just not used to this car yet or if the tires are the issue. I have owned several other BMW cars so I very used to the road feel you get with a bimmer, that why I love them. Would appreciate your thoughts.

What s the mileage on it? at first new tires can give you that feeling they need to be broken in

Tires are the problem. The sidewalls are very stiff and have little compliance, this along with their greater weight makes for a harsh ride. Try lowering your pressures to about 34 psi on ALL the tires. If this is not good enough, switching to normal sport tires will be a BIG help.

Are you sure it's a 540i?

I think there have been some posts on tire vibrations/shuddering.
It may be the suspension. A method to test this would be to have the dealer mount some different tires and do an extensive test drive. Otherwise, how will you know? It may be a more serious problem than the tires. Only testing will tell.

I've had the same problems. In the end they gave me 4 new runflat tires and all was solved.

Thanks for your advice, but I think the rear tires have to be 2+ lbs higher than the fronts because their a larger size tire.
