That's unlikely to be the reason, RFTs handle better than regular tyres. I saw on German TV this weekend an extensive test of RFT vs non-RFT and the RFT out-performed on every performance test (handling, braking, and of course the high speed nail-strip induced blowout without damage to the rims). The non-RFT only gained back some points by being quieter, 20% cheaper, and by giving a slightly softer ride (which is only noticeable if you have over-sized rims and hard suspension - with standard suspension you would barely notice a difference in the ride quality).

I'm running RFTs in summer on 18s and in winter on 17s with standard suspension, standard ride height and very pleased with the combination. I'll be paying the 20% premium to keep RFTs when my tyres need replacing.
I'm not the tirerack here, but I'd be absolutely shocked if a run flat outperformed its non run flat counterpart. Two reasons, 1st and most relevant is that run flats have super thick sidewalls (so you can drive on them with no air in the tire...) and as a result flex far less. The more a sidewall flexes the higher the ultimate grip levels (with all other variables remaining equal) 2nd, and almost as important, is the fact that run flats are very heavy and tires are unsprung weight. If I had to guess why BMW specifically changed the specification on the 550 to non runflats it would be primarily to reduce unsprung weight (notice: no M car has run flats).

Non-run flats ride better and perform better in the rain (again due to better tire flex).

This comes from personal experience. My 550 now has the 19 inch non RF Contis. My 07' 550 sport came with the 18 inch RF Dunlops.

IMHO, the more newly designed BMW suspensions, i.e. E90 3, E70 X5, X6 etc.. have integrated the run flats into the suspension equation much more successfully. Better ride quality

Be shocked, be absolutely shocked

Just reporting what the German car show concluded when they tested them on slaloms, braking, cornering and the high-speed blowout. They practically said if you don't mind the slight increase in noise, and slight increase in ride firmness, and you can afford the 20% premium, then buy them. I wish I still had the video of it but it was deleted from the wife's german DVR (and no it's not like my TiVo with TiVoWeb so we can't undelete).

Maybe they've made some progress in runflat tire err...tyre design. But as of 2007 they blew chunks (to use the scientific terminology). My wife's 335xi has the 18s with Bridgestone summer runflats. They're top of the crop and its like riding on a wooden wagon wheel. They're so hard riding, that I am going to put on non run flats in the spring so we can put the Bridgestones back on at lease end...

To each his own...

what are the best RFT at the moment? I had my Bridgestone RE050 for 4 seasons and need to replace those in a month or two.

Would RE050A still be the best?
