Hi,

Wondering if I have a steptronic gearbox problem here :

When facing down a hill, if I select reverse and take my feet off both pedals, the car rolls forward - no resistance. I'm sure this isn't right and that it should not be able to roll forward.

Anyone else experienced this ?

thanks

Depends on how steep the hill is. Simplifying the matter rather brutally, the engine at idle will only generate a certain amount of force (torque). If that is less than the force of gravity pulling you down the hill, then you will go down.

Bear in mind that on a 535d reverse is a taller gear than 1st, so if the car is pointing "up" the hill and you have 1st engaged it may stay there...

That's assuming the engine is on. If it's off, differently from a manual car, on an automatic there is very little resistance to movement with the engine switched off when "in gear", as there is no solid link between the wheels and the engine. That's why autos have both Neutral and Park positions.

In summary - it does not sound like a problem with the gearbox.

Thanks for that. I'm sure something has changed though as the hill in question is my driveway and I'm sure I never used to roll forward - maybe just my mind playing tricks on me !

Maybe. Or maybe you have positioned the car in the past at a point where the incline is slightly less, and just enough to keep the car stationary. Or - if you have a new car - parts including transmission parts are still working themselves "loose" (not in the sense of clonking on the road; just ran in and smoother)
