Try it all the way, don't be shy - just stay on it and let it go to 7000. It'll shift at redline. That's why you bought a BMW - remember?
I'll go look again.... I think the redline on the 550i is 6500 rpm?

the only way to really over-rev is to take a stick car to say 80mph and shift it into 2nd and release the clutch. That's called a money shift because it's going to end up costing you. you can't over-rev using the gas pedal, you will hit the rev limiter.

A friend did it to his M3- he wanted 4th, he got 2nd- $4k later all was fixed...
Another reason why SMG rocks!

The range on the tach is 6500-7000. The Sport transmission program will shift before you exceed that value so don't worry, just let the computer figure it out or stop driving in Sport. Look - just try it once - it ain't gonna hurt anything and the engine whine is so good you'll never forget it.

I think redline on this motor is 6500. I manually upshifter at 6700. Thus I did try it once, expecting the transmission would shift. It didn't. Hence my question.

Hmm, I spent a whole weekend allowing the SAT to upshift on its own in manual mode. I was on track at VIR. Watching the video, it looks like the shifts were 6300-6500 RPM. See

Early on, I did my own shifting then noticed it would do it on its own quite nicely.

Thanks Richard, I actually watched your video clip over and over and over, while I was waiting for my car!! Yes indeed, I noticed your upshifts that SAT did. Mine did not, at 6700 rpms. That's what caused me to post here. Now true enough, I had my foot fully into it, expecting it to shift anytime and it did not. I flipped the paddle because it rather scared me... Unless someone has a rational and supported explanation (like, redline programming in the transmission is actually at 7000, not earlier and that's safe for the engine...), I'll be asking my SA about this next trip in.

Thanks for confirmation,

Cal
