While I'm still in the break in period (800 miles down - 400 to go) and not running the RPM's too high, I was wondering whether this car had any sort of Rev Limiter (which is what it was called on my Infiniti G35). Basically, when the RPMs hit redline (7000 in that car), the car automatically "bounced" the rpms back down so as not to harm the engine. I only hit the limiter 2-3 times while horsing around.
Just wondering if this car had something similar.....which, knowing BMWs, I would doubt.

I've hit the rev limiter on a few occasions. Bounced right off it with loss of power.

Of course with 6MT, rev limiter does nothing if you downshift into 2nd at 120mph.

Here's a quick link to my initial impressions of the E60 rev-limiter back when my car was a little more than a month old...

BTW, the car acts in the same manner when you hit the electronically limited speed limit of 155mph.

Interesting information about the rev limiter. While I was initially a little surprised to learn it had one, it makes good sense to keep us from destroying our cars. Thanks to all for sharing.
So the next question, I suppose for 545/550 guys with manual transmissions, is what can you get out of each gear before having to shift @ redline?
Since I cant push it right now (darn break in), I'm wondering if you can get to 60 mph in 2nd gear, or whether a shift is needed. I could only get to 52ish in my Infiniti G35 in 2nd gear.
Honestly, while I do think this car is fairly quick, i'm hoping that once the break in is finished, I'll find its even quicker than now. Of course, I also find myself thinking that its pretty fast, but its also so smooth, that I dont realize how fast it is. And yes, I also find myself wondering all the time if the car is as fast as I thought it to be.
I know I'm totally neurotic.............
