I noticed that many people have this problem. How long did it take your dealer to fix this problem? Will i need to call ahead so i can reserve a loaner?

Had the same problem. After two unsuccesful tries to fix it they finally managed to do it when I took this report which I found on this great board.
It took one day to fix so your car will probably spent the night at the dealer. Get them to check all the modules stated below. A simple software upgrade will not fix the problem.
The report on what was done was:
Invoice to Warranty Claims
Description Nett ?'s
---Labour---
Road Test 25.48
Interrogate Fault Memory 25.48
R/R glove box 12.74
R/R both front door Trim Panels 63.70
R/R Body Control Module 50.96
R/R trim panels both door pillars 25.48
Carry Out opps Byte Flight test & signal test 38.22
Replaced airbag control module with gateway control module 25.48
Programming/encoding control units (with CAS) 44.59
Total Labour Charges 312.13
---Parts---
Control Uni 285.96
Total Parts 285.96
Invoice Total 598.09 (warranty cover)
Cheers.

Good luck

Bah, I had this fixed 10 days ago, and it came back yesterday! Looks like I'll be in contact with my dealer today.

My had the problem after 256 miles. I took it the the dealer back in January, they fixed and two months later it came back. Now I am taking my car again to the dealer on Friday.
If they dont fix it this time, I till not take it back to the dealer. Hope I dont get into an accident. If i get into an accident and that stuff doses not work, I will suit BMW BIG TIME.

I had the fault when I first got the car. It is possible for them to re-set (software fix) and they did that easily. The technician wasn't satisfied that this was a permanent solution however and wanted to replace the card. They didn't have one in stock and had to order one which took a day. Basically I took the car in twice but could have gotten away with once if they had the card in stock. No problems now for 7.5 months.
