Restraint System Malfunction
Hi all,
This message popped up on my Idrive on my way down to to Portland in stop and go traffic on I5. The message hasn't gone away after a couple of days so I'm assuming a sensor is out of wack.
Any ideas? I'd like to get some insight prior to calling the shop.

I just did a search on the forum and probably should have done that prior to posting. My bad, I can't figure out how to delete this post after the fact.
Anyway, looks like it could be a seat mat sensor?

It could be anything including seat mat sensor. The thing about Restraint System malfunction it won't clear itself even if the problem is resolved. You need to read out the BMW specific code to identify the problem.

If you are willing to spend a few hours figuring out BMW production diagnostic software (INPA) get a BMW K+D-CAN USB Interface cable from eBay. Make sure to ask seller that cable supports '10 E60 D-CAN bus. Some cheap interface cables do not have D-CAN. This one seems to be OK. Or ask around if somebody is coding BMWs in your city (bmwcoding . com). Alternatively you can take it to an indy shop that has Autologic equipment. They should be able to read E60s.

Figured I'd give an update on this. I ended up taking this into the dealership because I did pay for an extended warranty so figured I'd have them diagnose it.
After diagnosis they decided they needed to replace some wiring in my driver's seat. Parts came out to about $80 and labor was a whopping $1,191!!
Thankfully, my extended warranty covered ALL of it (less my deductible)
