Started the car up yesterday, loud 'BONG' from the CCC " Restraint system malfunction - Airbags or seat belt tensioner malfunction".
This is sounding expensive.

Yep, Seat mat sensor. about $500 - $1000 US to fix at the dealer.
Common problem with many many many stories of repeated issues after repair. I am currently organising it to get fixed.
You could try replacing it yourself, however, the dealer has to reset the code either way. So maybe worth just bighting the bullet and getting it fixed.
BUT, some say that the error is sometimes cuased by a battery cable fualt. All will be revealed when you get a diagnostics/Code reset from BMW

I just had this come on in my car yesterday. The lights for airbag and seatbelt are also both lit on the dash. Shouldn't BMW be responsible for saftey restraints and airbags up to 100k. I thought that was a Government law just like emission equipment.
