I did some research to replace my battery. Cold weather is coming and I no longer trusted my battery after a load test showed it did not pass the 850CCA rating. Below is some of the useful information I found and some choices I considered before purchasing the Intersate MTP-95R/H9 $185. The interstate was actually made in Germany, was an exact fit and had the vent hole. It actually had a vent hole on each side but the protective plastic cover on the positive terminal had a plug you can break off and use for the vent hole not to be used.

First some battery nomenclature...
Cold cranking amps (CCA) is a measurement of the number of amps a battery can deliver at 0 ° F for 30 seconds and not drop below 7.2 volts. So a high CCA battery rating is especially important in starting battery applications, and in cold weather. This measurement is not particularly important in Deep cycle batteries, though it is the most commonly 'known' battery measurement.

CA is cranking amps measured at 32 degrees F. This rating is also called marine cranking amps (MCA). Hot cranking amps (HCA) is seldom used any longer but is measured at 80 ° F.

Reserve Capacity (RC) is a very important rating. This is the number of minutes a fully charged battery at 80 ° F will discharge 25 amps until the battery drops below 10.5 volts.

An amp hour (AH) is a rating usually found on deep cycle batteries. If a battery is rated at 100 amp hours it should deliver 5 amps for 20 hours, 20 amps for 5 hours, etc.

Now some site info....

My choice Intersate MTP-95R/H9 15-9/16 x 6-15/16 x 7-1/2 $185

Free Replacement: 30 months
Pro-rata Warranty: 85 months

I wanted the AGM battery but couldn't justify the cost and didn't like it wasn't an exact fit. You need to place some type of filler block.

AGM battery choices are...

BMW AGM part nos.

61217594976 east penn agm 90ah 900a $269

Deka AGM (East Penn)

I hope this helps whoever is in the market for a battery.

I am glad it fits but there is some discrepancy in the length which had me concerned. Obviously it seems not to matter. In addition, the 9AGM49 battery is not valve regulated. AGM batteries are valve regulated. The proper battery for the AGM is 9A94R and 9A49 which are more expensive. The 9AGM49 is a premium maintenance free battery.

I investigated this when I was purchasing by speaking with a technical specialist at DEKA . A true AGM battery is valve regulated. Check it out yourself here. Call them.

What about "registering the battery"? I heard from my stealership that it is necessary to pay the to register the battery or else the car would not recognize the new one and thus not operate. Any truth to this? Any thoughts?

I am deciding to replace my battery also. My original battery is starting to show some signs of going bad. After some debate, I decided to go with BMW OEM battery because it's about the same price as the aftermarket battery ($200 shipped from getbmwparts.com) My indy shop can register it for $35 so for a little under $250 with oem battery sounds reasonable....so why go with the aftermarket that cost about the same price?
