Hi guys, just bought an 08 550i. Sirius was not installed. Dealer wants $1,200 to install it (includes 1 year of service). Seems high. I have had many cars installed with external sirius radios (2.5 x 4.5 inch screens). Anyone do this in an E60?? Pics and thoughts please.

Thanks!

It costs $450 or so to buy the module from your dealer. If you are pre-wired for satellite, it takes about 30 minutes to install yourself in the trunk area (Most of that time is re-arranging the fiber optic lines at the junction) There is a detailed PDF on the web and the kit comes with the same information.
Bonus: The module comes with a year of service included in the price.

Then with coding you could have a member here do it for next to nothing or have the dealer do it for the approximate cost of an hour labor.

I know my answer isn't fun, but I think every driver on the road should know a good deal about the vehicle they are in charge of.

I had the same issue. I decided to go with the portable option because I like the idea of using the XM module anywhere I want. I have a docking station hooked up to my home stereo and a unit hooked up on my boat. I also have a portable boombox for when I travel. It is nice to not be locked into just using it in the car. When you pay for the service why not use it anywhere? Of course it doesn't show up on the home navigation screen in your car, but you can install it yourself, it is super cheap, portable and looks pretty good. I chose to hook up the antena by the front windield on the driver side. It was super easy to run the wiring down the side, under the dash and tuck the remaining wire under the center console area. I have not had any issues with signal loss. Here is what my car look like after I installed it myself.

Heres a pic of my install. I removed the CCC and used the direct FM adapter. Works great. I choose the smallest radio I could find so it didnt look to goofty. I just like i can pull it out of the car and dock it at home too. I hardwired it behind the dash, ran the antenna all the way to back and put it on the center of the trunk closest to the window.
