Reprogramming after engine swap

My engine block and cylinder head had cracks in them causing me to have to hunt down a replacement engine from a wrecked donor car. I got it as close to what my original car/engine is, but I was wondering, after I swap it out do I need to reprogram the car's computer? I've heard of people needing to do that but wasn't sure.

Speaking of programming, what's a good program/harness to use to program? I wanted to reprogram the iDrive to run the angel eyes as DRL's if possible and if possible activate aux input if I buy one? I heard Carly is a good one? I have. 2005 525i if that helps any.

Assuming you bought the correct engine, it should plug right in, and run on the same program. As for the iDrive unit, Carly is not powerful enough (as of this writing) to do any of the things you want to do. You need to learn or find someone who can use the BMW program INPA and NCSEXPERT to code your iDrive, and LMA modules. Research BMW coding, it is popular, but the learning curve is steep. I learned a lot from roskinc on youtube.

The go to cable is from one stop electronics, and costs $100. Ebay and amazon cheapies are a crapshoot. I ended up paying a guy i found on craigslist $100 for some basic coding like iDrive warning off, AUX-In, and other stuff i forgot about.

Try getting the cable from EUAUTOHAUS either on eBay or the company's website.
