I have decided that I want to replace my tires with non RFT.

Two of the tires I have are near toast, and two are good with probably 20,000 miles to go. They are Bridgestone RE50 245/18

How do you think car would handle with two all season performance tires on the front for a couple years and the Bridgestones on the back?

NO !!!

I would not recommend mixing RFT and non RFT. The grip and handling characteristics are very different (that's why we change them) and could get you into real danger. Eg in cold weather the RFT's are much less sticky than the non-RFTs. So the back end could let go much before the front - oops! Bump handling could also be "interesting"

As a PS, how can tyres have 20,000 miles to go? I have never seen more than 15,000 from a new tyre, and often less. Are you sparing the horses too much ?

OK I got the point......don't mix RFT, non RFT. The ride with my winters (Dunlop M3) is SO much better, and surprising still handle O.K. I honestly did not believe all the griping about the RFTs until I put them on this spring.

I am hoping to get rid of the RFTs ASAP. The hard part is taking off two of them that still have lots of life in them.

The shop I deal with is going to push Toyos. Has anybody put Toyo Proxes 4s on? Good, bad???

No experience of Toyo's, but a few people have posted good reports on here.

You might get a few $$'s on ebay for your part worn RFT's.

If you for Toyo, go for the Proxes T1-R. Excellent tyre at very good value. The CF-4 are nowhere near that league and don't seem to receive good reviews, either.

I run the T1-R myself in 20" and they are class

halohalo,

Those of us who have E60's (and E61's) that ride and handle as well as they were designed to do (i.e. with non-RFT's) either risk a can of sealant, or, as most people do, get a space saver spare wheel to go in the boot tray. BMW dealers sell kits that include wheel, tyre, jack, chock and storage tray for around GBP ?150, but if you shop around, you can get the bits for around GBP ?85.

It is a seriously worthwhile modification IMHO.

Mike
