I just got a 2005 530i Individual and this car was ordered by someone but it fell through and it was an old inventory so got it at a really good price. So far no problems and I drove about 245 miles, but for some reason the keys have very short range for lock and unlock. I have to be very close to the car to unlock or lock the car. Isnt 245 miles enough to charge the keys?

I've read somewhere -- maybe in this forum -- that if you hold the remote to your head as you press unlock or whatever, it will increase the range. Seems like it works sometimes.

If your car is misbehaving like mine was, then you will need a new trasmitter and then a software update. No big deal, but the process will take a day.

was it a software update for the PCM/ECU or just the transmitter?

Yeah....and if you lick the transmitter first before sticking it to your forehead the conductivity will be much better....

This is true. It turns your body into an antenna, which improves range.

Hold the key to your chin, and press the buttons... and you'll see.

I also asked my SA about the range of the remote. I thought it might need a new battery.

My SA said that it did not have a battery, but charges when in the car. He said to point the remote directly at the rear view mirror - to get the best range.

I hope this might help your problem. BTW I have no trouble unlocking the car from about 50 feet, but I cannot use the remote to find my car in a large parking lot. I guess I will just have to remember where I parked it.

When I hit my remote in my pocket it seems to work wonderfully. I have about a range over a mile!

Of course it may be that I have ba**s of steel.

at first i thought you guys were joking about hold the key near your head or chin... but i went down and tried it, it did work but then after a few times it started not to work. i guess its the batteries which are really weak. The BMW service in my city is Bullshit and thats also the only BMW service in the country lol...so welcome to the third world...
